Book and information marketing news and ideas from Dan Poynter

April-June 2000

Hervey's establishes wholesale book Web site. John Hervey says his site will sell to bookstores and gift stores buying in quantity. This is a unique idea and a great way for publishers to reach the gift market. See http://www.herveysonline.com

The Postal Service wants to raise postage in early 2001. First Class envelopes and post cards would go up one cent and Priority Mail would increase from $3.20 to $3.45. Rates for mailing periodicals would increase even more. For the latest rates, see http://www.USPS.gov

Who is selling your book online? For stores and prices, see http://www.booksearchengine.com

Want to reduce spam? The Direct Marketing Association has launched E-MPS. Like their Mail Preference Service, you may place your name on their opt-out list indicating that you do not wish to receive email solicitations. DMA members are supposed to use this list to suppress e-MPS consumers from their own lists. See http://www.e-mps.org

Need a PO box? Check back on the 11th of the month. Markus Allen, the Direct Mail Guru, says that if box rent is not paid by the 10th, it is made available the very next day.

Editorial: Your book provides you with credibility as well as a new profit center. The secrets are to use that credibility to bring customers back to buy more of your products and time. But you must maintain currency; do not become a fulltime consultant. Keep working in your field, add to your book and publish revised editions.

Is this any way to run a publishing company? We think it is and we have been doing it for over 30 years.
